The Metro Moose Junior B team kicked off their 2010 2011
CHA campaign this past weekend. The team starts the season with a huge
target on their back as the defending regular season and CHA playoff
champions. After battling through a tough preseason schedule, the Moose
were itching to get the CHA season started.
The Moose traveled to Frederick, Maryland to face off against the Frederick
Freeze. The Freeze were one of the top three teams in the CHA last season
and the coaching staff felt this was a great test for the team early
in the season. After a long miserable bus ride the team took the ice
ready to get the year started. Just 22 seconds in defenseman Will Norris
netted the first goal of the season off a great passes from Joey Gilhooly
and Mike Donato. Just three minutes later the Moose would pick up their
second tally with Anthony Galeano getting his first Junior hockey goal
off a pass from AJ Carazo. The first period would end with the Moose
leading 2-0. They peppered the Freeze goaltender with nineteen shots
on net. The score would remain the same through the second. The Moose
came out of the second intermission with a chip on their shoulder and
took over the game with three more goals. Gilhooly would get the Moose’
third tally off a pass from Anthony Alloggio. Defenseman Omar Hussain
would get his first Junior hockey goal a minute later. Forward Sam Manzi
got his first Moose goal to close out the scoring off passes from Matt
Galeano and Michael Gallagher. The Moose would out shoot the Freeze
50 to 10. Goaltender Peter Guerriera would pick up his first Moose shutout
and win.
On Sunday morning the Moose returned looking to take 4 points on the
weekend. Needless to say, the Freeze came out looking to avenge Saturday’s
loss. They would hold a 2-0 lead before Anthony Markaj would get the
Moose on the board five minutes into the second period. Just two minutes
later the Moose would even the score with AJ Carazo scoring off passes
from Joe Gilhooly and Matt Galeano. Gavin Grogan would put the Moose
ahead for good off a pass from Anthony Galeano. Grogan would net his
second of the game early in the third off great passes from defenseman
Rory McManus and Kevin Barry. Barry then would follow with his own tally
just three minutes later. Forward Evan Kundrat would continue the scoring
getting his first Junior goal off a pass from Brian Long. Matt Galeano
netted the next Moose tally off a pass from Sam Manzi. Manzi would close
out the scoring for the weekend off a pass from Barry and Galeano. Tommy
Dorsey made 16 saves to earn his first victory of the season.
The Moose next head to the NJ Hitmen Classic in Wayne, NJ. The Moose
will be facing off against the Hampton Road Whalers, Atlanta Knights,
Florida Everblades and Brewster Bulldogs. Forwards Ryan Cheng and Eric
Hansen are still out with injuries and hope to resume skating shortly.
